Our Policy team, together with Nobel Women’s Initiative, has been raising awareness of the need to protect and support Women Human Rights Defenders globally. These brave women face many dangers while pushing for women’s rights and more just societies. We recently provided input to Global Affairs Canada on Canada’s guidelines on supporting human rights defenders, highlighting the need to take into account the unique circumstances of women and LGBTIQ+ human rights defenders.
We are also urging Members of Parliament to study how Canada can better support Women Human Rights Defenders (in the House of Commons Subcommittee on International Human Rights), and have been invited to brief the Subcommittee in the new year. We look forward to sharing the inputs and views of our partners on how Canada can do better.
In recognition of Human Rights Day, and on the last day of #16DaysofActivism, The MATCH Fund salutes all the brave Women Human Rights Defenders risking their lives in the name of equality, peace and security in conflict areas around the world; and we also salute those who are working hard to support and protect them.
