2008 Norma E. Walmsley Award for International Understanding

Congratulations Laura Sparling.

The Norma E. Walmsley Award for International Understanding was established 12 years ago in honour of our founding president for her outstanding contribution to the international community.

MATCH is pleased to introduce the 2008 recipient, Laura Sparling.

Laura is currently pursuing her Master's degree at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA) at Carleton University within the Conflict Analysis and Resolution specialisation. Throughout her studies, she constantly endeavours to re-evaluate and re-conceptualise the varying roles of women in conflict.

Through the NPSIA Student Internship Program, Laura gained valuable practical experience interning with the Ottawa-based NGO Peace Dividend Trust. This summer Laura will make the shift from intern to full-time summer employee and hopes to bring an informed and woman-centred perspective to the activities this NGO performs in conflict zones globally. Laura is also a dedicated member of the student delegation of Rights and Democracy and an enthusiastic player for the NPSIA intramural soccer team.

In her upcoming Master's research paper, Laura will examine the role of gender quotas in the integration of women into the post-conflict governments of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo. Laura hopes to gain an understanding of what role this gendered integration will play in the peaceful reconstruction of these societies.

MATCH is happy to continue to help enrich the University experience for an exemplary student. Dedication and leadership of students like Laura towards furthering understanding between and among women in Canada and in the South are an inspiration to us all.
