Internship Opportunity

The Women, Peace and Security Network Canada (WPSN-C) is a collaboration of international organizations and individuals committed to a) promoting and monitoring the efforts of the Government of Canada to implement and support the United Nation Security Council Resolutions on women, peace and security and b) providing a forum for exchange and action by Canadian civil society on issues related to women, peace and security.

The WSPN-C is seeking an intern who will contribute to the overall operation and coordination of the Network. The position will be administratively housed within The MATCH International Women’s Fund Ottawa office; however the role will be in support of the broader network.

Responsibilities, while not limited to the below, will include:

  • Support all aspects of monthly WSPN-C meetings, including minutes, logistics, member updates, member updates on our website and ensuring files are properly centralized;
  • Provide assistance to the website coordinator, including developing and maintaining a plan for the WPSN-C’s Internet presence including expanding Twitter and Facebook outreach;
  • Perform continuous enhancements and modifications to blogs, Twitter and Facebook posts and other social media tools as and when necessary;
  • Support the subgroup coordinating Canadian initiatives in the International Campaign to Stop Rape and Gender Violence in Conflict, including liaison with the Campaign, leading social media campaigns, logistical support, coordination support and analytical writing;
  • Monitor media reports, especially related to Government of Canada statements and actions and share broadly amongst the network and online;
  • Support specific research requirements in relation to the current state of women in conflict situations, in order to best serve the thematic needs of the broader network. This could include documenting work done by Canadian NGOs, researching Government of Canada initiatives or developing educational tools.

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor of Arts or currently enrolled in a BA program
  • Familiarity with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325, supporting resolutions and other international instruments associated with Women’s Rights
  • Demonstrated experience using social media tools like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube
  • Demonstrated experience in updating website content
  • Ability to conduct research and identify relevant information
  • Proofreading and editing skills
  • Ability to create, compose and edit written materials
  • Ability to work independently and follow-through on project initiatives
  • Perform other administrative tasks as needed

The ability to speak and write in French is considered an asset.

The weekly level of effort and duration of the internship will be negotiated with the successful candidate. There is flexibility, however a minimum 3 month commitment of 1 day/week is required.
